SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Junior #Hakim Warrick# sank a pair of free throws with four seconds left on the clock to seal the victory as #arv/25 Syracuse (15-5, 5-4) snapped its two-game losing streak with a 63-61 triumph against Rutgers (13-8, 5-6) on Feb. 10 at the Carrier Dome.
With SU leading 61-58, Rutgers had two opportuities to tie the game in the final minute, but Quincy Douby missed three's on consecutive possessions. After Douby's second attempt rimmed out, Warrick grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He stepped to the line and hit both shots to give the Orange a 63-58 advantage. The Scarlet Knights' Ricky Shields buried his sixth three-pointer of the contest to pull Rutgers within two with two seconds left, but Syracuse was able to run out the clock to earn the win.
Warrick paced the Orange with 16 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. It was his 10th double-double of the campaign and his seventh in the last eight contests.
Syracuse took control of the game early, taking a 21-13 edge on a Warrick dunk at the 8:56 mark of the first half. Two free throws by the Scarlet Knights' Herve Laminzana made the score 24-19, and Rutgers cut the lead to four, 26-22, on a trey by Marquis Webb at 3:47. Back-to-back field goals by junior #Josh Pace# extended SU's lead to eight, 30-22, and the Orangemen held a seven-point lead at the break, 30-23.
A basket by junior #Craig Forth# to begin the second half pushed SU's margin to nine before Rutgers went on a 14-5 run to tie the game, 37-37, with 13:16 left in the contest. A three-pointer by Shields put Rutgers ahead by five at the 11:35 mark, but the Orange responded with a 12-3 scoring spurt to take a 50-46 lead. Freshman #Terrence Roberts# capped the scoring streak with a pair of free throws and also had a follow-up jam during the run. A three by Webb had the Scarlet Knights within two, 54-52, but sophomore #Gerry McNamara# answered with a three of his own to put SU ahead by five, setting the stage for the final minutes.
Forth finished with 12 points and nine rebounds for the Orangemen. It was his second consecutive game in double figures, representing the first time he has scored 10-or-more points in back-to-back contests in his career. Pace contributed 12 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. McNamara added 10 points and notched five assists. McNamara came up empty on two free throws in the second frame, his first two misses in BIG EAST competition this season. Senior #Jeremy McNeil# played 17 minutes off the bench and scored six points, all in the second half.
Ricky Shields paced the Scarlet Knights with 20 points, 18 of which came via the three-point shot. Laminzana netted 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Webb added 11 points and also had eight rebounds.
The Orangemen held Rutgers to 29 percent from the floor (18-of-62) and 9-of-30 from behind the arc. It was the first time the Orange have held an opponent below 30 percent shooting since Richmond shot 25 percent from the field (16-of-64) versus SU in the 2002 NIT. Syracuse shot slightly better than 40 percent from the field (23-of-57, .404) and held a 47-40 advantage in the rebound column.
Syracuse leads the all-time series with the Scarlet Knights 28-9, including an 18-1 mark in matchups played in Syracuse.
SU sophomore #Billy Edelin# was not in uniform for the Rutgers game.
The Orangemen will be back on the road again, traveling to Miami on Saturday, Feb. 14 for a 2:00 p.m. matchup with the Hurricanes.
